Researchers suspect that children could elevate problems to a marriage. An eight-year study of 218 couples proves that ninety percent of the couples experienced a low in marital pleasure once the first child was born.
“Couples who do not have children also show diminished marital quality over time,” says Scott Stanley, research professor of psychology at Denver University.
“However, having a baby accelerates the deterioration, especially seen during periods of adjustment right after the birth of a child.”

“In about one third of the relationship domains that we looked at, women are reporting significantly greater relationship problems caused by the birth,” Doss tells Web MD. “This may be because, typically, women take up the lion’s share of the child care and, if they were working before the birth, have many more employment-related adjustments to work through.”

Another senior researcher Rhoades, states that the psychologists didn’t confirm if the impact of babies on sexual relations was a motive for less on the whole approval. But she adds that a new baby’s impact on a couple’s love life is certainly reflected in happiness measures.

Stanley warns against concluding that the children spoil on the whole enjoyment in life. "There are different types of happiness in life and that while some luster may be off marital happiness for at least a time during this period of life, there is a whole dimension of family happiness and contentment based on the family that couples are building. This type of happiness can be powerful and positive but it has not been the focus of research," Stanley says.
